I remember a time when I had to trawl the town centre to find eco friendly cleaning products, usually in a health shop, well away from where I needed to buy the rest of the week’s shopping. Thankfully supermarkets in Colchester, my home for some time now, have started stocking a wide range cleaning products that won’t harm the environment, and I can now get hold of everything from washing up liquid to fabric softener in local supermarkets. Colchester has indeed come a long way in its eco offerings! As well as stocking well known brands of products, some supermarkets have also developed a competitive range of own brand cleaning products which are just as effective, but often a lot cheaper. I think it is increasingly important that supermarkets throughout the UK, not just Colchester recognise the need for affordable green products. As the nation starts to tighten purse strings, the last thing we need is for shoppers to put a stop to eco friendly purchases – preventing further damage to the environment is a choice that should not be hampered by economic factors. I am looking forward to a future where non-eco friendly products are the overpriced minority on supermarket shelves; I cannot imagine many people would actively go out of their way to pay to damage the natural world.
